The library is
the
place to study at
CDU
. It's where all the people are, where all the collaboration happens and where you are going to spend...
a lot of time.
(an absurd amount of time really...)
But thats a good thing because of how awesome this place is, and all the features it has.
So sit back and relax as tell you all the things I've learnt about the library, so that you too can become one with this wonderful place.
(and pass your degree)
Why should I go to the library?
A fair question. Many people study at home, but the library is a better place to study and have meetings for the following reasons.
The library has free aircon
The library has free wifi
You can have meetings in person
You can go to a quiet spot (away from your neighbours barking dog)
But some people will say you can get these things in one of the other study spaces around CDU and you should go study there. However,
The library has standing desks
There are awesome computers at the library
The library has a staggering view
The library has private meeting rooms that you can book
and so I think it becomes clear the the library is the best place to study.
But where in the library should I study?
An excellent question. There are many different places to work in the library, with each spot suited for different things.
Below are some of my favourite spots, organised by what level they are on. There is a map of each level to show you where to find the spots.
Level 1
Level 1 is the front face of the library. This is where you can find all the help you need about using the library and where you will walk through many times.
You can talk on level 1.
Study Space
There are 4 study rooms on level 1, study room 1.07a, 1.07b, 1.07c and 1.07d. These rooms are completely sealed off, meaning you and your team can study without being disturbed.
Each room has 1 large circular table, enough for 4-5 people, and there is a big TV screen on the wall, which you can connect to using a HDMI cable.
All rooms are wheelchair accessible and able to be booked out for 2 hours at a time, making it an awesome space to study interrupted or to have a team meeting.
Level 2
Level 2 is the most flexible level, with pretty much everything you need. Here you can hold big meetings, use computers, eat your lunch and a range of other things. Overall I spend most of my time on level 2.
You can talk on level 2.
Collaboration Space
Level 2 is home to my favourite collaboration space... or maybe it's my second favourite collaboration space...
Regardless, this is an awesome place to have team meetings and study together. It is easy to move the tables into any formation you want, and the chair roll easily. Their are couches nearby if you need a more informal meeting, and the veranda is right outside if you need to get some fresh air.
The biggest problem is the lack of charging ports, but other than that its a top class space for study and collaboration.
Focus Study Desks
The focus study desks on level 2 are super useful for putting your head down and getting things done.
Their immersive design make sure that you want be distracted by whats happening around you and they have charging ports so you can study uninterrupted. Another big bonus is that if you have a quesion, you can just go to your mate in the desk in front of you and have a discuss the problem, as you are allowed to talk on level 2.
These desks are super helpful for when you are trying to study together as a group in the collaboration space but your friends are too distracting. By using one of these desks you can still be a part of the study without all their distractions.
Computer Lab
The computer lab on the second floor is possibly the best study space in the whole library. It is usually empty, very big, close to the toilets, bubbler and eating area and it has a ton of awesome computers.
This place is big enough to host your whole team for the meeting. The computers are big enough for everyone to see what is happening on your screen, and there are plenty of roller chairs for everyone. The chairs are super comfy, having suspension and the ability to lean back.
I prefer using these computers over the computers downstairs as many people use the computers downstairs, meaning they are pretty dirty.
The only downside of this room is that the aircon is too cold. After sitting long enough in this room, it becomes hard to type. But for some people this is a good thing. In which case you will love this room.
Lunch Area
If you want to eat at the library you have to eat at this spot or the outside area next to the collaboration space, as you can't eat food inside the library (don't be that person -_-). This spot is probably the better of the two.
This area has
the microwave(!!!), ceiling fans and is much nicer and cleaner than the other eating area, although it is less private during busy times.
The door is automatic, and whether you push the door or press the green button, it will open automatically. The only difference is how you initiate that.
The Microwave
If you couldn't tell, I am very excited about the microwave. I mean, just look at it!
To be honest, it is just a regular microwave (with a trick), but the reason I am so excited about it is that I did not realise it was there for my first 2 months at CDU. I used to walk to the basketball courts most days just to warm up my food and walk all the way back to the library. Not fun. Thankfully I found the microwave, and after struggling with it for a few minutes I got it to work.
Let me help you avoid the trouble by sharing with you how to use it.
Put your food inside the microwave, with the lid on
Close the microwave
Do the trick
Press the "+30" button to increase how long you warm your food up in 30 second increments.
Press start
Wait patiently (but hungrily)
Open the microwave
Profit
The Trick
The trick is that you have to push the door of the microwave on the bottom right to get the microwave to start. If you don't do this, the microwave won't start.
You can see me doing it in the video alongside.
Level 3
Level 3 is the quiet and elite area of the library, because this is the place of no distraction.
You cannot talk on level 3.
The Standing Desks
The crown jewel of the third floor.
With these bad boys, you can say goodbye to backpains and hellow to healthy living. I need to say no more.
The tables on the left come with an awesome view, and the ones on the right come with quick access to the elevator and the stairs. Can't go wrong with either.
The Beagle Deck
A large collaboration space with an amazing view overlooking the fields, this is one of those places you only find at CDU.
If ever you need a super hige meeting, this is the place to go. There is plenty of space and plenty of meetings happening. There is a buzz here that is perfect for your team, or class, to smash out that next piece of work.
Definitely one of the more popular spots with students, and for a good reason.
Conclusion
I hope you have found my small tips and tricks guid to the library informative. I am sorry for the brief conclusion, but I really need to get going on other assignments, catch you on the flip flop!
